Rock Climbing - In Sea to Sky Country the granite monoliths surrounding the community of Squamish, British Columbia, Canada attract many rock climbers and mountaineering enthusiasts to the area every year between the spring and fall months.
The many crack, slab and face climbing routes leading up the mountains are developed by local experts. The route numbers are many creating climbing routes to challenge the experienced climber and routes to learn on for the beginner climber. The area is well equipped for all levels of mountaineering ability.
There are many techniques of rock climbing. Many of the techniques are based on the type of route taken, the experience level of the group and the lead climber. Climbing routes in Squamish vary from bolt climbs, free climbs and top rope climbs. The more difficult climbs require multi-pitch skills while the smaller climbs use single-pitch techniques.
In the Squamish BC region there are many areas to climb. But for most climbers and wanna-be-climbers, the Chief and the Smoke Bluffs are the premier climbing destinations best suited for mountaineering in Sea to Sky Country. Both destinations provide many established climbing routes and a great opportunity to practice your skills and establish confidence.
The Chief is a world famous climbing destination which receives allot of attention from mountaineering circles. It is the second largest granite mountain in the world. the routes located on the Chief provide a great opportunity for multi-pitch climbing. The routes enable climbers to practice setting anchors, belay techniques, station management, route location, lead strategy and retreat strategy.
The smaller crack, slab and surface climbing routes are located at the Smoke Bluffs located north of Squamish Village on Loggers Lane Road. the routes here are generally single pitch climbs and shorter routes. A great place to learn and practice climbing techniques.
Guided expeditions in the Squamish area are considered some of the best in Canada. Many of the climbing instructors are members of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. The local guiding companies provide lessons for beginners and tours for the experienced climbers. The tour companies provide the equipment and the knowledge of the climbing routes.
